Check which monasteries are open (some close in various days of the week) and get there early before the buses arrive, or later in the afternoon when they have left. Great area for hiking and climbing. Very clean and neat considering the huge numbers of tourists. Best to stay at least overnight. Must be able to do steps!!

This place blew us away.
This place blew us away. We were in Greece for 2 weeks and this was one of our favorite activities- it's just absolutely breathtaking! The rock formations look other wordly and pictures do not even do it justice. The views from up top are amazing- it was cloudy the whole time we were there and it was still beautiful. We were in Kalabaka for about 24 hours, but honestly would have liked to stay another day just to relax and take in the views. We did a half day hike which included going into one monestary and then went into one other monestary on our own. We didn't feel like we needed to visit each monestary as the outside views are what we enjoyed more. If you have a car, you can easily drive up to all of the monestaries, but some of them do have a lot of steep steps you have to take.

If you really want to explore the area at your own pace, hire an electric bike.
Don't brother with guided tours, they really are all the same with the guide talking too much and occurring in the heat of midday.

It was amazing, really worth the trip although we took the mountain road on the way there and it was a bit scary but it was raining as well, quite a few hairpin bends but took a better road when we left. You can’t imagine how those monasteries were built all those years ago. The tour we booked did not turn up but we still managed to explore on our own.

We got to the monasteries at 9 AM in the morning to begin our day of sightseeing. The monasteries are all unique with unique relics to be found. We returned later that evening around 815 to watch the sunset. The sunset did not disappoint and we were able to drive to each of the monasteries again and take additional photos with different lighting. Amazing how different the monastery loo when all the crowds were gone. I highly recommend going in the evening to experience the quiet.

Dellas Boutique was located between Kalabaka and Kastraki and easy to get to by car. We had a very nice room but it was located on the side of the hotel so it has good views, just not the best views of Meteora. The breakfasts were excellent with variety and great tasting food. We used the local bus system to get up to the Monasteries. We also used this location to take day car trips to Vergina and Ioannina which worked out great. The hotel is very nicely done in dark woods and tile. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
Excellent location in center of Kalabaka. Nice small apartment with everything you need for a short stay. There is a close public parking nearby but you can also park on the street. Recommended for a short visit to Kalabaka and Meteora monasteries.
This hotel felt more like a luxury rustic apartment than a hotel room. The bed was fantastic - the bathroom and jacuzzi were exceptional as well. If you want to feel "at home" this is absolutely the Suite for you! Modern - sexy and comfortable! Meteora was the highlight of our Greece trip and we will be returning to these Suites for our stay!
Room was nice, rather small but I was only there for 2 nights so it was fine. Buffet breakfast was available and the staff there is lovely and always ready to help. Location is near the meteora, if you want to head out to Kalabaka you will need to drive. Also, staff was really nice - I left something behind at the hotel and they messaged me after I left to see if I would like to come back to collect them.
The warm generosity and kind hospitality of the hosts Efi and Nick. The apartment was clean and offered all that Booking.com described on their website. Perfect location to visit the Monasteries, 5 mins walk to the bus stop. Lovely location and stunning view from the two balconies. Anything we required, Efi was quick to help us out and Nick was very accommodating regarding taxi transport. I highly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Kalabaka - Meteora.
Garden House was perfect for our two night stay visiting Meteora. It's situated in Kalabaka so close to all the amenities there, but also on the side of town as to also be a pretty easy walk into Kastraki as well. The apartment was perfect and had exactly what we needed and everything worked perfectly. The garden was also a great place to sit in the morning which even had a great view up to the Monastery of Saint Stephen. We would certainly stay here again with no hesitation when visiting Meteora.
Lovely little apartment, Furnished to a very high standard and fully equipped and beautifully clean. Owner met us on arrival and it was great to be able to keep our rental car safe in their private car park. Owner lives on site should you need any assistance. Supermarket just around the corner. Lots of restaurants and bars close by.
With a reasonable level of fitness, you can walk from here to Meteora, via a steep footpath at the top end of Kalabaka and see the stunning views and visit the monasteries.
Ideal place for families. Nice host and very clean apartment. Well equipped. Good location in Kalabaka with fantastic scenery. Only 5 mins to the main street. Would highly recommend staying here for 2-3 nights and exploring Meteora and the surrounding mountains. We will definitively recommend it. Great value/quality ratio.
The location was amazing for exploring Kalabaka and Meteora. Dita was very helpful with directions to the hotel from the train station, and the map was a very nice guide to refer to when trying to visit the area and monasteries on your own.

The air is fresh and you can appreciate the Meteora more in the Winter
I recommend coming here in the winter like we did. The air is fresh and you can appreciate the Meteora more in the Winter. I can't imagine walking in heat in this area. Though you can take tents in the summer but it can get too crowded. So late Spring and early Autumn is the ideal time.
